Best Kitchen Scales in 2021 [UPDATED]

There are so many different types of kitchen equipment and not all of them are needed, a set of scales is however a must. Whether baking or following a recipe you will at some point need to measure out ingredients. In this article I am going to share the best kitchen scales available, as well as my tips on finding the right one for you and your requirements.

I would say that one of the most important small appliances you will need in your kitchen is a digital kitchen scale. Don’t get me wrong, when I started cooking and baking I didn’t really measure much out, this resulted in a lot of failed dishes and I would even make too much or not enough. If you are into baking then simply put, you need decent kitchen scales.

As well as making sure you have the correct measurements so your recipes turn out correctly, because you are not using lots of different measuring cups you will also be saving up on the washing up. The best kitchen scales will normally have an option to zero out the weight, so you can weigh one ingredient in a bowl and then zero it out and then add another ingredient in the same bowl to save time and washing up.

I also love the precision kitchen scales that are able to measure even the lightest of measurements. Now you wont need this in many cases but in situations such as making your own bread and you need an exact amount of yeast, it can come in very handy.

One of the best things is that you do not need to spend a lot of money to get a decent scale, most you can get under £20 and they will often last a very long time. I have tested a number of kitchen scales to find the best and I even have scales that are over 10 years old and the battery still works perfectly.

If you are looking for the best kitchen scales then I would recommend the digital one from  Salter Digital Kitchen Scales, it’s incredibly accurate, lightweight, simple to use and is very low cost. I’ll go into more detail below…

Salter have hit the number 1 spot in this best kitchen scales list and that is simply because they tick every single box for what you would typically look for. They are low in cost, easy to use and just the right size.

The actual scales have been designed so that you can use any size of bowl on top, whether you are wanting to weigh out flour in a bowl or even a little bit of salt. You can also measure everything all in one bowl, due to it being able to zero out the measurement. I really like the aquatonic function, which easily allows you to convert grams to ml. This makes it very easy when trying to measure liquids such as milk or stocks.

You don’t even need to use a bowl if you don’t want to, you can measure directly on the scales. This is perfect if for any reason you wanted to weigh out some vegetables. The surface is made from stainless steel, so very easy to keep clean.

I also really like the auto shut off function, as this helps to save the battery life. It does however stay on for 3 minutes and then shuts down, which is a good amount of time for you to be able to weigh everything before it does turn itself off. It is however incredibly easy to turn back on again if you need to.

The Salter Digital Kitchen Scales are a very well-known brand, as they are even used by those appearing on Great British Bake Off. This has helped them to become one of the best selling scales on the market.

Ooni makes some incredible products and even though this one is initially designed for weighing out ingredients for making your own pizza, it can be used for everyday use in the kitchen. It is slimline and features 2 weighing platforms, the largest of the two can weigh up to 10kg. The weight of this one does go up in 1g increments, ideal for most uses.

If you need a little more precision than the small weighing platform is ideal. The max weight on this one is 200g and measures increments of 0.1g, allowing you to weigh the smallest amounts of ingredients.

The scales are incredibly simple to use with a nice LED screen and are made from a high quality stainless steel. The Ooni kitchen scales are powered by a AAA battery, so very easy to change if you need to.

Heston Blumenthal is an incredible chef, in fact he is one of my favourites. He has worked with Salter to create these precision kitchen scales. Now if you have seen Heston cook, you will see how precise some of his dishes are so he needs a way to measure that precision. With these scales, you will be able to measure ingredients for the most complex of recipes that require accuracy.

Similar to the Ooni Kitchen Scales, this one has two weighing platforms. One which goes from 1g to 10kg and the smaller one which measures from 0.1g to 200g. I love the fact that it does also have additional functions such as add and weigh as well aquatronic so you can measure liquids.

You are able to get measurements in both metric and imperial, so you can throw away that conversion chart. Since it’s a precision kitchen scale, it is incredibly accurate with a LED display. The scales are made from stainless steel, so easy to wipe clean and its powered with 3 AAA batteries.

Here we have something a little bit different and to be honest, something that is revolutionary. Imagine being able to chop your vegetables and measure them at the same time, Salter has made it possible. This is a 2 in 1 appliance, it is a chopping board but at the same time acts as a scale as well. Its slim so can be stored fairly easily, yet it has the length of a chopping board so plenty of room to measure anything you need.

It has an add and weigh function, allowing you to measure multiple ingredients at a time. I like the fact that you can measure in imperial or metric, allowing you to follow any recipe you might find. It does also have an aquatronic function, which means you can measure liquids in ml.

Due to the length, you can weigh up to 15kg. This is more than enough for any home cooks kitchen but will even be perfect for a professional kitchen as well. Price wise, its more than some of the others in this best list but it is actually reasonable and very good value.

If you prefer jug kitchen scales then this one is perfect, even if you don’t usually use them this one would also be tempting. This one is made by Morphy Richards, well-known for producing excellent kitchen equipment. This is a great 3 in 1 product as you can use it as a jug, mixing bowl or as scales. Simply add ingredients, remove it from the base and easily click it back into place again.

All it takes is a press of a button and you can easily switch between measurement modes and units. The display is not the easiest to see though as it is low down on the handle and is a bit dark. Some have also commented that the jug can be a little tough to remove. Overall though it is an excellent product and perfect if you are short on space or want to reduce the amount of kitchen equipment you need.

If you are looking for a pretty low cost kitchen scale, you cannot go wrong with these ones from Accuweight. They are perfect for anyone looking for a bit more control on their ingredients, whether you need the scales for baking, meat, herbs, spices or measuring liquids.

The actual platform is really large, allowing you to measure individual ingredients or those in a large bowl. If measured from a bowl it does have a handy tare function, so it will zero down. This allows you to add all of your ingredients in one bow, saving you plenty of washing up.

One function I love is the fact that you can measure your ingredients in different formats, such as metric and imperial. It even shows you the measurements in ml. When you are done it does have an auto off function and even tells you when its low in power, so you can make sure you change the batteries before it does run out.

The kitchen scales are made from tempered glass and are also really easy to clean, simply wipe them with a disinfectant wipe and you’re set to go again. Overall a very good option and for the price, its incredible value.

When it comes to measuring, you are able to measure anything from 1g up to 5kg. It does also come with a tare button so you can measure multiple ingredients in one bowl. One of the things I really like is the fact that it allows you to change the measurement from imperial to metric, making it easier to try different recipes without having to do any calculations.

It is powered by 2 AAA batteries so these can be easily replaced, as well as featuring an auto shutoff function to save battery power. Overall a very good choice and one of the cheapest on this best kitchen scales list.

Complete Guide to Kitchen Scales

With so many options it can be hard to know what you should look for in a kitchen scale, not only are there different types but many have different features or functions you should be aware of. Below I have gone through things that I was thinking about or things I wished I thought about when looking for the best kitchen scales for me and my needs.

The Type Of Kitchen Scales

You will no doubt have come across different types of Kitchen scales, there are 4 that you can choose from. Below you can learn about each type;

Mechanical Scales

Mechanical kitchen scales were probably more common in the late 80’s or 90’s, they don’t use batteries but instead use a spring. You basically have the attached bowl and when you place something inside, the spring activates and moves the dial along the scales. These are handy if you want all of your ingredients together in one bowl, although you cannot zero out the weight so you will often have to weigh them separately and then combine them.

Since it also uses a spring to determine the weight, it is not going to be accurate. You will also find the older it does get, the spring becomes worn and it’s even less accurate.

Digital Kitchen Scales

The most common choice is the digital kitchen scales, probably one of the most common. They make it much easier for people to use, as they have a LCD screen so that you can easily read the information. I like the fact that you can more often than not zero out the results and get things weighed with accuray with just the touch of a button.

One reason why these Digital kitchen scales are so popular is because they are incredibly small and lightweight, therefore are often compact and lightweight, so they are easily stored. Now these do often use batteries, however more often then not the battery will last years.

Balance Scales

This type of kitchen scales is a bit more traditional looking and something you would expect in a cottage. They have two sides, on one side is where you put what you want to be measured and on other you would put some weights. Let’s say you have a 100g weight, you place this on the side and then put on the ingredients. Once both sides are level you will know that you have 100g of the ingredient weighed out.

These types of scales are not the easiest when it comes to storage and do require you to also store a number of cat-iron weights, which are quite heavy. When it comes to accuracy, you are not able to get exactly the same weight every time you use them.

Jug Scales

The final type is the jug scale, which is somewhat new when compared to others. These are really useful as they allow you to measure both solids and liquids. The display is normally on the handle and you can easily pour the contents out of the jug, making them perfect for those that are in a hurry and need to quickly measure ingredients.

Most of them allow you to zero out the weight, so you can measure more than one ingredient together. The main drawback however is the accuracy, as these are known to be less accurate than digital kitchen scales.

Accuracy

When it comes to kitchen scales, accuracy is the most important thing that you need to consider. This is even more important when it comes to baking, as you really need the measurements to be as exact as possible. If accuracy is something that is vital to you, then you would want to get a digital kitchen scale or a precision scale, as these will measure incredibly small increments.

Maximum Weight

The next thing you need to think about is how much are you going to be weighing out. Most kitchen scales will allow you to weigh up to 5kig, this would be more than enough for most people that are baking or cooking in their home. If you are however making big batches or cooking on a larger scale then you can get some that go up to 10kg.

Functions To Lookout For

When looking into the best kitchen scales, there are a couple of functions that I believe are essential.

Tare

Tare is basically the function of being able to zero out or reset the weight on the scales, when adding additional ingredients. If you do have a single bowl on the scales and you want to add multiple ingredients, instead of adding up the measurement you can simply reset the weight to zero with a single button.

Auto-Off

Since Digital Kitchen Scales use batteries, its important that it does shut off after some time to save the power. If not then you will be replacing the batteries everytime you forget to turn it off, which I have done a few times. Something to check is that the auto shut off is not too short and it actually gives you time to finish what you need to measure before turning off.

Storage

Something you might want to think about is storage and the size of the kitchen scales. Most of the digital ones are fairly small and can be stored very easily, however the bigger ones such as balance and jug scales are much bigger. Some of these may however have parts that separate for easier storage.

Pricing

The final thing you want to think about is the price, you do not want to be spending more than you need to. This list of best kitchen scales does have a wide range of prices, from really cheap to a little more expensive. Just because there are some really cheap options, doesn’t mean they are not good quality. You can get a good quality set of scales from £10 and there is no need to spend more than £50.
